Dear frank.choi big brother,
To make a better aquascaping is always my wish!  But I have difficulty to find the building block of my aquascaping.

I also find it difficult to keep color on my fish. For example, Anthias fish is quite difficult to keep its vibrant colour.
There are several factors to affect the colour of our fish.  1. Lighting(suitable for each species)  2.Water parameter(low nutrient level)  3.food(suitable food) 4. Other factors.(seasoning)
I don't know much but I think other bigbrother can share their experience of keeping fish color.

Yesterday, I got a pair of anthias.  It is one of my dream fish species. They are not red bar anthias  Their size are 2cm and 1cm repectively.  It is very challenging to keep color and raise them to adult size as well!

Personal Reef culture experience in mariculture rafts(Yu Pai) two years ago.




My friend own a mariculture raft and a speed boat in Sai Kung.  He invited me to visit his mariculture raft for fish and eating.  I think that it is just too boring for just eating and fishing on his mariculture raft.  A crazy idea come to my mine is that how about to conduct a simple reef culture experiment on his mariculture raft.  It is interesting and rewarding as well.
1.Time to conduct the experiment   
Summer time(The water quality is uaually poor. Algae bloom often as well.  Storm and heavy rain fall may also affect the coral culture.
Winter time(The water quality is the best of the year. Water temperature may reach to 14-15 degree Celcius.  It is not suitable to all kind of tropical hard and soft coral). Sun light is also ample.
Therefore, I choose to conduct the experiment in late autumn. The temperature of seawater is suitable  to some subtropical soft coral.  The water quality is fine and the weather condition is good. Not much rainfall and nearly no stormy weather to encounter in late autume.
2. Type of coral which I select to conduct the experiment.
Hard coral is usually more demanding.  Therefpre, I choose soft coral first.
Tropical soft coral is not so suitable due to the temperature of seawater in Hong Kong.
Therefore I choose softy from Japan.
Two type of high price value and beautiful Japan softy is being chosen.  Usually Japan soft coral use to keep in lower water temperature.
I choose 1.Japan green leather coral and 2 Purple christmas tree coral of Japan.   They are health and free of any parasite.  They also expand very well  inside the tank.  
3. Material and method.
I use a cage to mount and protect the soft coral away from some coral consuming fish of Hong Kong.  I lower tthe cage at a depth of about 1.5meter where I think that the lighting and water quality is fine for them.   




Four weeks later I come back again.
Let us see some photo first.
1.  The purple Japan christmas tree coral.

The coral is still intact. No obvious sign of growth is detected.   The basal rock and cable tie is growth of some slimy brown alge


At a closer look, the slimy brown algae also growth on some tips of the christmas tree as well.  Obvious the cage is fully cover with brown slimy algae.

The same situation also happen on the green Japan leather as well.




The situation is not so good as what I image at first.  I also find brown algae coverage on top of the leather coral.  
Another month again, my friend informed me that all my coral disappeared and only the basal rock remaining.  He is my best friend and don't lie on me.  I guess the most probable reason is on the water quality of Hong Kong. This experiement told me that it is not so suitable to growth Japan soft coral in Hong Kong mariculture raft!
