Its really crazy, its not easy to do the daily maintenance, such as cleaning the glass, feeding, water change.......I cannot imagine how many hrs the owner need to spend on the routine work everyday.

I understand that the owner is low profile but if possible ....I love to visit his house and it will be my pleasure to see both tanks.

我今日比左D相我大佬睇，佢無養魚不過提出左一點，可能缸主要注意一下。
缸主用左好多塑膠箱做DIY, 佢話大大部份生產膠箱D膠都吾會加UV stablizer，個箱放係太陽下時間一長就會變"脆"，會有風險。除非個箱係注明for户外。
我大佬做左塑膠好多年應該信得過，不過佢話短時間係沒問題，但最好都係改用玻璃or亞加力。

Good observation and very good opinions from your brother!
Your brother is right.  There are still many problems existing and need to fix in his system.
There are in fact two large water containers to make the surge.
The blue one(plastic) is for the reef tank.  Unfortunately, this one is not allow to use now.
Another one(glass fibre) which is below the blue one  and the glass fibre container is for the shark tank.  
I attach two photos for your reference.  We can follow the outlet pipe and it is clear that there are two container.  One on top and the other grey one below(although it is hiding behind the concret,we can bearly see the corner of the second one).

Plastic is not uv resistance and it will crack in long term.  It also absorb water and bulge out. It change its form gradually.  In fact this plastic container is not design for holding water in long term.  Therefore, the owner change them to glass fibre instead.  The watercontainer for the shark tank is no such problem any more.  Besides that,  the blue container can make the wate level in the main reef tank rise two to three inches within 10 second.  The power of surging effect is so strong that it already damage a little corner of the glass to break and crack.  The owner has to change it back to smaller size and another material as well.  Therefore, we can not see any surging effect on the reef tank in my video!





Your opinion is very valuable.  It is also the aim of my thread.  I hope that can receive some suggestions which can help the tank owner to improve his tank.  Trial and error method is the only way to complete a task that the tank owner have not contact before!

Hi Coralfriend,

My English is also poor but I hope my input can help the owner a little.  If the reef tank's glass is already broken and cracked due to the surged effect, then its really risky as I think the crack will not stop eventhough you stop the surged box.....

I think the shark tank can sustain the surged effect because its few feet under the ground, it helps to reinforce the structure and absorb the force generated by the wave.  In the long run, the reef tank may need to have an extra framework to reinforce the glass structure.  As the tank is so big that each inch movement is approx 460pounds, if the wave is 2-3inches high then the force is about 1000pounds per every 10seconds.  The structure of the tank need to be very strong to avoid the damage due to the wave but I dont know how to do the calculation....and may need to have some input from professional point of view on this issue.

You are quite right!  Crack will propagate and become larger and larger.  Therefore, the tank owner remove the crack area entirely and then reinforced with another glass on top.  It is the area underneath the overflow site which the crack begins.  I attach two photos.  The second one is the left hand corner of the first one.  You can see that there are an extra glass cover the area under the opening of overflow area.  The tank owner emty all the water of this tanks first. Remove all the fish.  Clean the area well and then remove the crack entirely and cover the area with another extra glass. Since the cracking event has happened, the surge tower has forced to stop in action.  In fact, this tank is build by the tank owner and his elder brother.  His brother is a civil engineer. His brother advocate a lot in the design and fabricate of this tanik. His brother give instruction of not open the surge devise until any modification is made.  Therefore, I think that this tank is quite safe now!

Thank you for your suggestion.  Use air condition to settle the overheat problem is another solution!  I hope that the tank owner will serious consider it as well!  But I think that water cooling system has to be used even the entire area is cool down by air condition.
